Installing Knobs On Cabinet Doors

How To Install Knobs On Cabinet Doors

Cabinet door knobs are installed for both functional and aesthetic reasons. Knobs provide ease in opening the doors, and at the same time define the feel and style of the cabinet. A cabinet can look fresh and different just by changing its knobs. That is why it is useful to know the procedure of installing knobs on cabinet doors. Here are a few tips on installation that may be helpful.

First determine where to place the knob. You can do this by holding out the knob against the door and see how it would look on that spot. While it can be placed almost anywhere, the standard rule is to place it as far from the hinge as possible. Lesser effort is needed to open the door if the knob is placed on the edge opposite of the hinge side than when it is near it.

Some carpenters use a standard distance of 2.5 to 3 inches from the edge of the cabinet. For cabinets mounted on the wall, position the knob at this distance from the bottom corner. If it is a base cabinet, measure from the upper corner going down. Wherever the position is, be sure to screw it at a comfortable height. It shouldn't be too high that it would be hard to reach, or too low for a base cabinet.

If the cabinet door has a frame or a raised panel with designs, place the knob at the center of the frame or at its flat area.

Next step is to drill a hole. In drilling, one can use a boring jig or a plastic template. It would suffice to just use a tape measure and mark with a pencil the exact spot where you want the knob to be placed. However, this method is risky if you are not that skilled in drilling. The wooden jig or plastic template is the safer way to go, especially if there are several cabinets in line that you would need to put a knob on. This would ensure that the knobs are perfectly aligned horizontally.

Making your own boring jig is easy. You will need two rectangular plywood pieces of the same size and a strip of wood as thick as the cabinet door. Nail the strip of wood in between the two rectangular pieces. What you've created is a pocket-like template that can be slid through the lower corner of the door. Once you've determined the right distance of the knob from the bottom corner, use the same value on the boring jig and drill a hole through it. Now you can drill a hole on the door by slipping it through the bottom corner. Make sure that the jig is secured in place.

If you cannot build one yourself, plastic templates are available at your local hardware store or home centers where cabinet door knobs are also sold. The template allows drilling of holes in different locations.

In drilling, make sure that the drill bit is of the same diameter as the screw. The screw must also be long enough to go through the knob for at least ¼ inch. Read the installation guide provided by the manufacturer for detailed instructions.

Installing knobs on cabinet doors is easy. With a few tools and materials, you're all set to give your cabinets a brand new look!
