Modern Asian Style Cabinets And Cabinet Doors
|
Asian-inspired homes are slowly becoming popular in some parts of the US. Together with this development is the increase in demand for Asian antique furniture. But because antiques are rare and very expensive, manufacturers have developed modern designs that resemble traditional Asian art, elegant designs that showcase the beauty of the wood and skill of Asian craftsmen. These new designs are part of what we call modern Asian style. And these designs can also be seen in furniture like the modern Asian style cabinets and cabinet doors. Modern Asian style can be best described in one word - functionality. The fusion of traditional Asia and the modern lifestyle of the US resulted in the creation of pieces that have less intricate details but are still multi-functional as it was in the old Asian days. We see storage chests that can function as buffet tables, TV stands and media centers that also serve as room dividers, and coffee tables that can also function as night stands. It is not hard to imagine Asian style being incorporated to modern design. Both are based on the same principles and characteristics of minimalism and functionality. The straight lines of Japanese Mizuya cabinets are almost the same as most modern base cabinets, minus the complicated hand-painted designs and calligraphy. Wood carvings in cabinet doors continue to exist, but they have been minimized. Some cabinets and cabinet doors continue to have the distressed, antique look, but the designs have been adjusted to fit the modern, contemporary lifestyle. So an antique apothecary's chest can serve as a CD storage cabinet in today's home. One thing that the modern Asian style has retained from traditional Asian style is the rich colors. Modern Asian style has preserved the lush colors of the East, as seen in their cabinet doors that are made of black elm or deep red gingko wood. Cabinets of modern Asian style are movable as they are practical. The pieces are modular and can be mixed and matched. They can be moved from the living room to the bedroom and even to the kitchen, depending on your storage needs. And because the pieces are unfitted, they can be adapted for any purpose. An altar cabinet can later be used as an entertainment center, just as a bedside table can be moved to the living room and function as a corner table. To achieve the modern Asian style, attention must be brought to the cabinet doors, since this serves as the "face" of a cabinet. Most cabinet doors are of the sliding type. During the old Asian days, houses and rooms were small, and so they had to make the most out of the space by using sliding doors. This same principle makes sliding doors ideal for a small flat or loft, where space is also minimal. Another way to achieve the modern Asian style cabinet door is through the use of pulls and knobs that are Asian-inspired. Available in brass, bronze or and steel, cabinet pulls in bamboo designs can provide that Asian look. Gold accents and lacquered ebonized wood can also give the same effect. Some manufacturers have cabinet door knobs with Chinese or Japanese characters. It is easy to find modern Asian style cabinets and cabinet doors.
